Coach Profile: Scott Brooks

For being a young coach, Scott Brooks is managing a lot of talent. From Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook to James Harden and Serge Ibaka, skill isn’t the only reason for Oklahoma City Thunder’s extraordinary chemistry—Brooks’ coaching ability is clearly responsible for the exceptional team play. Overtime, Brooks has helped each player find his definitive role on the team.  For example, Brooks brought Harden off the bench, one of the best decisions he made for the Thunder.

Let’s check out his stats as an NBA coach:

Denver Nuggets Assistant Coach (2001-2002)

Sacramento Kings Assistant Coach (2006-2007)

Seattle SuperSonics Assistant Coach (2007-2008)

Oklahoma City Thunder Coach (2008-present)

● NBA Coach the Year (2010)

● NBA All-Star Game Head Coach (2012)

Brooks was named the 2010 NBA Coach of the Year after leading the Thunder to a 50-win season and the 8th seed in the Western Conference playoffs. The following year he led the Thunder to the Western Conference Finals, where they eventually lost to the Dallas Mavericks (the 2011 NBA Champions). In 2012, Brooks lead the Thunder to the NBA finals, where they lost to the 2012 NBA Champions, the Miami Heat. In the summer, Brooks was signed onto the Thunder as a multi-year head coach. The contract was said to be worth about $18 million.

Based off his experience, Brooks clearly produces results and has an exciting future ahead with the Thunder.

  1. I think the NBA has entered a new era of winning. I know many older NBA fans complain about how the NBA isn't like how it used to be. There's so many people out there that say late 80s and the 90s were the best years of basketball. Things were just different: rules, players mentalities, and ...a third thing. (I don't have a third thing, but when you list things it should be in things of three...)

Well let me tell you, the story may have the same ending, but the so many new characters, plots and twist, and variables we couldn't have imagined years ago. People just need to learn how to read it to find the entertainment. Coach Scott Brooks just happens to be one of those unsung heroes that some people don't pay attention to.

I think we all know that Western Conference looks like it has a better story to tell. But I'm hoping the East will surprise us.

    1. Agreed Paulie. Western Conference is looking mighty exciting (as usual in my opinion), but I'm hoping the East picks up on some of the hype. Miami is obviously the dominant team in the Eastern Conference (especially with Rose being out), but hopefully with the eventual return of Rose to the Bulls and a couple other teams like the Pacers, Knicks and maybe even Bucks, the East will be as interesting to watch as the West.
